LWIL kicks-off the festivities

On Friday 3rd December SWWIC held their first ‘Ladies with Influence Lunch’ in two years at The Alverton Hotel in Truro. The importance of this event was palpable as the event sold out within weeks of the date being announced – everyone was keen to begin the festive period and the ‘Lady with Influence’ to get us started was the delightful Melissa Thorpe Head of Spaceport Cornwall.

Hugely influential in her sector, Melissa is Canadian-borne, growing up in British Columbia and on Vancouver Island in the middle of the forest and has two young girls. Melissa always held an interest in astronomy and air travel and studied STEMs subjects and economics at university and did a master’s degree at the London School of Economics.

During her speech Melissa gave an insight into what has been achieved over the past 12 years since she had been brought in to look at the assets Cornwall had in the aviation and aerospace sector to see how more jobs could be created in the Duchy; and also, what was in store for 2022!

The event was overseen by Glayne Price, who confirmed that it was time for her reign as chair to come to an end. She thanked the committee and everyone who had helped shape SWWIC during her 6–7-year spell and welcomed Kate Mills as the new chair from January 2022. Glayne highlighted how proud she was of SWWIC – it had certainly been an amazing period in her career.

The event ended with a raffle with all proceeds going directly to our SWWIC charities, Hugs from Henry and Sophies Smiles. SWWIC are delighted that £270 was raised and particularly grateful to those members who kindly donated prizes:

  • Marie Hewitt Interiors Ltd T/A The Window Dresser – Scatter cushions
