20 SWWIC members enjoyed a historic and fascinating tour of the Market Hall, Devonport on Friday 24th May. Hosted by Micki Beck of the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO), we were able to see the building in its raw state before the new extension and refurbishment works progress.
Le Page Architects has designed the scheme to preserve the building’s historical features, whilst creating contemporary spaces, in keeping with its intended use. An immersive dome is a key feature of the plans, creating a cinema, which will be the first of its kind in Europe.
The broader scheme, which is set to transform the former, Grade II listed, Devonport Market Hall into a technology hub, bar and restaurant, will also incorporate flexible work, event and leisure spaces.
The initial stages of the redevelopment have exposed the beautiful iron, stone and brickwork and gave us a glimpse of how the original building was constructed and used. The contractor, Classic Builders, provided details of the complex rebuilding and refurbishment that has already been undertaken and what is yet to come, with the majority of the original features being restored/reused.
By popular demand, we will revisit Market Hall in 6 months to view the progress prior to completion.
