SWICC Charity
Fundraising Events
Every year SWWIC organises a variety of social fundraising events to raise money for charitable causes. Whist we strive to organise as many events throughout the year as possible, we usually try to hold an annual fundraising event which is timed to coincide with National Construction Week.
SWWIC Charity for 2005/2006: Dame Hannah Rogers School
This year SWWIC has chosen to support a locally based charity, Dame Hannah Rogers School, Woodland Road, Ivybridge, Devon, PL21 9HQ. The school was founded in 1787 and has two centuries of experience in caring for young people. The school caters for young people with physical disabilities, including some severe communication disorders.
There can be no doubting the invaluable work which Dame Hannah Rogers School undertakes. A recent OFSTED inspection found that: "the quality throughout the school is outstanding". The school provides a wide range of facilities to include physio, speech and occupational therapy, nursing and 24 hour care, active social life, life skills, advice and intensive support, hydrotherapy and counselling.
SWWIC is hoping to support the Dame Hannah Rogers School and "Help Their New Wing Take Off".

SWWIC Charity for 2003/2004/early 2005: World Vision
Each year SWWIC supports a charity of its choice. During 2003 to early 2005 SWWIC pledged support to WorldVision. Through a variety of fundraising events during this period, SWWIC was able to support WorldVision in their work in underdeveloped countries around the world. WorldVision help over 100 million people in their struggle against poverty, hunger and injustice.
Construction of Water Borehole - Mozambique
Through the support of its members, SWWIC was able to make a donation to WorldVision of £2,500 so as to provide life-saving water to the people of Namacurra Area Development Programme, located in Mozambique. The construction/installation of the water borehole will assist those local farmers who otherwise rarely grow enough staple foods due to unreliable rainfall and the lack of a regular and reliable supply of water. Any surplus water is provided to inhabitants so that they may care for and maintain vegetable gardens. Water previously obtained from standing water, open wells and unsafe water sources carry the risk of water borne diseases. It is hoped that SWWIC's donation will benefit the community as a whole (some 2,500 people) thus avoid their need to trek for hours in search of water allowing additional time to attend work/school.
By way of aftercare and continuing maintenance, WorldVision ensures that a water management committee is formed, thus providing necessary training to locals in water source maintenance.
Aid to Tsunami Survivors
SWWIC was also able to make a further £500 donation to WorldVision following the devastating events which took place following the Boxing Day earthquake and sea surge which followed. Within days WorldVision staff were helping 200,000 tsunami survivors across the region and over £500,000 worth of life-saving aid had made it to the field at this early stage. Air flights took vital supplies to Sri Lanka and WorldVision also sent airlifts from Dubai and Nairobi into the region. Further relief was provided in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand providing relief packs, relief aid, food, clothing, bedding and other practical items.
Well done to all our members for their efforts in raising money for such a worthy cause - bringing real changes to peoples lives!
