Visiting Plymouth's Public Spaces

SWWIC Committee member Niki Read and Martin Ivatt, City Centre Coordinator, both of Plymouth City Council, recently lead a team of SWWIC members across the city centre, to show and discuss the plans for the future of Plymouth City Centre.

The civic layout of Plymouth, planned in 1956, was based on Patrick Abercrombie and J Paton Watson’s post-war Plan – A Plan for Plymouth. The team at Plymouth City Council has been sensitively planning to refresh Abercrombie’s vision for the city, reviewing how best to preserve its 20th century credentials, and include within the improvement project for very 21st century needs.

We walked in beautiful sunshine, looking firstly at the plans for Civic Square, discussing technical and anecdotal aspects, along Royal Parade learning about the bus improvement scheme, back up Old Town and New George Streets, again discussing plans for improvements, both to the surface level public spaces and to the drainage systems below, and also the surprises that are uncovered when undertaking such public realm projects. We ended the talk at the sundial where an overview was given for the aspirations for the Armada Way improvements.

Thank you to Niki and Martin for a really interesting tour. We look forward to seeing our beautiful city refreshed ready for the next half a century’ s living needs.
